Jakarta is well-connected to the rest of the island of Java. Trains and buses provide reliable transportation between cities and are both popular ways to travel. Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta International Airport is situated 19 km / 12 miles north-west of the city centre. This dual-terminal facility is currently expanding and plans to add two more terminals in coming years.

Indonesia's most important airport, Soekarno Hatta operates flights to major travel destinations across the archipelago, greater Asia and the rest of the world. A shuttle bus (DAMRI) transfers passengers from both terminals to the city centre, although taxis can complete the journey in substantially less time.

Hire car firms are well represented in the Arrivals Hall of Soekarno Hatta International Airport, and you will also find rental cars available in the centre of Jakarta. Driving conditions can be jarring for tourists, as congestion and a disregard for rules of the road can be a problem. Bear in mind that in an effort to reduce congestion, certain roads are only open to vehicles travelling with three or more passengers during peak periods of traffic.

Several bus and coach companies provide transport between cities on the island of Java. There are four bus terminals across the city, and Safari Dharma Raya and Kramat Djati are the most popular bus lines. The Transjakarta busway is currently working to expand public thoroughfares throughout Jakarta, in order to provide a greater network of transportation options. Overall, this initiative has been hailed as a success, as many new bus corridors have opened.

There are four state-run train stations in Jakarta, found at Gambir, Kota, Pasar Senen and Tanah Abang. Gambir Station (at Merdeka Square) is a popular point of disembarkation for those arriving from neighbouring cities. Plans for a public monorail are currently in limbo.

Taxis are widely available in Jakarta, and tourists are advised to call ahead whenever possible rather than hail taxis from the curb. The latter scenario usually results in higher prices. Autorickshaws (bajaj) are to hand for fast, inexpensive transport, although these tend to be more dangerous than traditional taxis.
